There's no official GTA 6 length: "80 hours" is one developer's personal playthrough, including some side tasks. We compare it with GTA 5 and RDR2 using HowLongToBeat data, explain what will make GTA 6 longer, and promise our own timings after November 19.
How many hours GTA 6 lasts officially
Officially, it's unknown. Rockstar hasn't published the story length on the game's website, on Newswire or in the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store descriptions. The game launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and until then there won't be any honest timings from players.
Where "80 hours" comes from
The figure came from Rockstar North head Rob Nelson in an interview with The New York Times (summarized by PSU, August 28, 2026). He said that his own playthrough took about 80 hours: the main story plus some of the optional tasks that affect the story.
So this isn't "Rockstar confirms 80 hours", as some headlines put it, but the experience of one person who knows the game well. A regular player seeing Leonida for the first time could finish faster by skipping side content, or take much longer by exploring the world. We don't count insider playtime figures because they're unofficial.
The story itself, without spoilers, is on the GTA 6 story page.
How long GTA 5 and RDR2 took
This is data on Rockstar's previous games. Average times are calculated by HowLongToBeat from player reports; the figures change from time to time.
| Game | Main story | Main + extras | 100% | All trophies (PowerPyx) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA 5 | ≈ 31.5 hrs | — | ≈ 79 hrs | 150+ hrs |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | ≈ 50 hrs | ≈ 80–82 hrs | ≈ 180 hrs | 240–300 hrs |
| GTA 6 | no official data; Nelson: ≈ 80 hrs including some side content | |||
HowLongToBeat figures for GTA 5 are as reported by TheGamer, for RDR2 as reported by Dexerto and bo3.gg. We don't have a verified "main + extras" figure for GTA 5, so that cell is empty. The PowerPyx trophy estimate includes online play: in GTA 5 that's more than 100 hours for rank 100 in GTA Online.
An interesting coincidence: Nelson's 80 hours almost exactly match what players spend on the story and side tasks in RDR2.
What will make GTA 6 longer or shorter
Here's what's already known from the developers and from official showcases:
- A bigger map. According to the NYT, citing Rockstar, the whole map is about three times the playable area of RDR2. Rob Nelson said Vice City is twice the size of Los Santos (in an interview with Flow Games, and the same in the NYT), and the built-up areas outside the city are about 11 times larger than in GTA 5 (per Insider Gaming). There's no area in km² or square miles. More on the GTA 6 map page.
- More interiors. Aaron Garbut of Rockstar North told Edge magazine there are "an order of magnitude" more interiors than in previous games.
- Money between missions. According to Nelson (Famitsu), missions alone won't give you enough money to progress through the story, so you'll have to rob, sell stolen cars and earn in other ways. How is covered in our guide on how to make money in GTA 6.
- Lots of activities in the world: racing, fishing, hunting, the gym, diving, more than 170 animal species; the list is on the GTA 6 side activities page.
- What shortens the journey: the Ryde Me ride service works as fast travel, you can call your personal car at any time (Nelson, as summarized by IGN), and refueling, he says, takes only about 10 seconds.
Story or 100%: what we'll measure
"How long to beat" means at least three different answers, and after launch we'll give each one separately:
- Main story: only the required missions through to the finale.
- Main + extras: plus the optional tasks that affect the story and some of the activities in the world.
- 100%: if the game has such a tracker. What it might include is covered on the GTA 6 100% completion page, and trophies on the GTA 6 trophies page.
In GTA 5, according to HowLongToBeat, a full completion took about 2.5 times as long as the story; in RDR2, about 3.6 times. Only the game will show what the ratio is in GTA 6.
How we'll update this page

- The first week: HowLongToBeat averages, as soon as there are enough reports.
- After our own playthrough: our time for the story and for 100%, with the date and game version.

How long is GTA 6: frequently asked questions
How many hours does it take to beat GTA 6?
It hasn't been officially announced. Rob Nelson of Rockstar North told The New York Times that his own playthrough, including some side tasks, took about 80 hours. That's an unofficial estimate.
How long is the GTA 6 main story?
Unknown until launch on November 19. For reference: according to HowLongToBeat, the GTA 5 main story takes about 31.5 hours and RDR2 about 50.
How long does 100% take in GTA 6?
There's no official data, and Rockstar hasn't shown what counts toward 100% yet. Players spend about 79 hours on 100% in GTA 5 and about 180 in RDR2 (HowLongToBeat).
Is GTA 6 longer than RDR2?
We don't know for sure. According to the NYT, the map is about three times the playable area of RDR2, and Nelson's 80 hours are close to what players spend on the story and side tasks in RDR2.
How long does it take to beat GTA 5?
According to HowLongToBeat, the main story takes about 31.5 hours and 100% about 79 hours, not counting GTA Online.
Can you beat GTA 6 in a weekend?
Unlikely. Even the GTA 5 main story takes more than 30 hours on average, and the GTA 6 developer spent about 80 on his playthrough. On top of that, according to Nelson, story missions alone won't give you enough money, so you'll have to earn it between them.
