How much storage to free up
On November 3, Rockstar said on Rockstar Newswire that the GTA 6 pre-load is up to 212 GB depending on your device. It gave no separate figures for PS5 and Xbox. Free up 250 GB or more to leave room for a day-one patch and updates; that is our advice, not a Rockstar requirement. More on the GTA 6 file size page.

Rockstar confirmed the pre-load dates and times on the Rockstar Newswire on November 3. The downloaded files won't launch until the game unlocks on November 19 — you can't play early on PS5 or Xbox.

How long GTA 6 will take to download
Estimated time to download 212 GB depending on your connection. This is our calculation with a margin for overhead (~90% of your plan's speed); on launch night store servers are overloaded, so real times may be longer.

So don't wait for the night of November 19: pre-loading from the 10th is there so that on launch day you only need the day-one patch.
Where to install: internal vs external drive
- PS5: PS5 games run only from the internal SSD or an added M.2 SSD. A regular USB drive can store games, but you can't play PS5 versions from it.
- Xbox Series X|S: Series X|S games run from the internal drive or the official Storage Expansion Card. You can move a game to a USB drive for storage, but not to play it.

Bonuses and GTA+
Every purchase before November 20 gets the Vintage Vice City Pack: the '55 Vapid Stanier sedan with a garage, '80s outfits and a weapon pattern. Digital pre-orders made by November 19 also include one month of GTA+. After that the subscription renews automatically, so if you don't plan to pay, turn off auto-renewal in your subscription settings.
Staying safe

212 GB at 100 Mbps takes about 5 hours, at 50 Mbps about 10.5 hours. That's why it's worth starting on November 10 rather than on launch night.
Can I install GTA 6 on an external drive?
Not to play it: PS5 needs the internal or an M.2 SSD, Xbox Series needs the internal drive or the official expansion card. A USB drive is for storage only.
