Animal stars and pelt quality: why three stars is the ceiling
Every animal in RDR2 has a quality of 1 to 3 stars. According to PowerPyx, Game Rant and Mein-MMO, it is set at random when the animal spawns. Pelts come in three grades, Poor, Good and Perfect, and they are tied directly to the stars.
The key rule: the animal’s stars are the ceiling. A two-star deer will never give a perfect pelt, however accurate your shot. A three-star animal gives a perfect pelt only with a clean kill: an extra shot or the wrong weapon drops the quality by one or two grades.
Three-star animals are rarer: according to Gamepressure, most animals give poor or good pelts. Legendary animal pelts have no rating: they are always perfect.
How to study an animal and see its stars
Before you shoot, study the animal:
- Aim at it (L2 / LT) or look through binoculars or a rifle scope.
- Press the Study button: R1 on PlayStation, RB on Xbox. On PC, check the keys in your control settings.
- The animal’s name and star rating appear in a corner of the screen.
Binoculars let you check an animal from afar without spooking it. After studying, the Compendium and the “Show Info” prompt name the recommended weapon. More about the Compendium is on the RDR2 animals page.
You cannot study a predator that is already attacking. Red Dead Wiki and PowerPyx suggest hitting it in the body with a poison arrow or a poison throwing knife: the animal goes down, then you can study it and finish it with a knife. Bait (Herbivore Bait or Predator Bait) keeps an animal in place, and the stronger Potent baits are crafted at a campfire.
What to kill it with: weapons by animal size
The size split comes from the PowerPyx guide, checked against Mein-MMO, Red Dead Wiki and rdr2.org.
| Size | Examples | Weapon and ammo |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny | squirrel, rat, chipmunk, frogs, snakes, songbirds, ducks, pheasants | Bow with Small Game Arrows |
| Small | rabbit, raccoon, beaver, badger, muskrat, skunk, possum; eagles, owls, hawks, turkeys; iguanas | Varmint Rifle |
| Medium | coyote, fox, pig | Bow with regular arrows or a repeater (Carbine Repeater, Lancaster Repeater) with regular ammo |
| Big | deer, buck, wolf, cougar, panther, ram, pronghorn, boar, young alligator | Rifle (Springfield Rifle) or a bow with poison arrows; for panthers and cougars the Wiki also allows Improved Arrows |
| Gigantic | bear, bison, moose, elk, bull, ox, cow, adult alligator | Sniper rifle (Rolling Block Rifle) with regular ammo or a bow with Improved Arrows |
The sources disagree here: PowerPyx recommends only a sniper rifle for gigantic animals, while Mein-MMO and the Wiki (based on the Compendium text for elk and bison) also list a bow with Improved Arrows. We do not recommend poison arrows on gigantic animals. According to Gamepressure, a Small Game Arrow is crafted at a campfire from a regular arrow, a feather and a shotgun shell. For every gun in the game, see RDR2 weapons.
How to get a clean kill
- One shot, one kill. Every extra shot lowers the pelt quality. If the animal runs off wounded, you will not get a three-star pelt from it.
- Aim for the head. On the biggest animals (bear, bison), aim for the heart: according to rdr2.org and Gamepressure, their skulls are too thick.
- Dead Eye. Once upgraded, it highlights fatal points in red.
- Call the animal. Mein-MMO suggests pressing the call button while aiming: the animal lifts its head, which makes a headshot easier.
- Wind and scent. Eagle Eye shows the wind direction, and Cover Scent Lotion hides Arthur’s scent, so the animal does not bolt before you shoot.
- Knife. You can lasso an animal and finish it with your hunting knife (not for small game, risky with big animals). According to Mein-MMO, after a critical hit the animal collapses as it bleeds out: finish it with a knife and the pelt survives.
After the kill, aim at the carcass: if the game still shows three stars, go ahead and skin it.
What ruins a pelt
| Cause | What happens |
|---|---|
| Several shots | Every extra hit lowers the quality |
| A weapon that is too powerful | The bullet leaves a hole, small animals get blown apart |
| Shotgun | Riddles the pelt; according to the Wiki, you won’t get a good rabbit pelt with it |
| A weapon that is too weak | The animal survives the first shot and runs, so you need a second one |
| Explosive ammo | According to Red Dead Wiki, it ruins pelts on regular animals, and drops a panther down to one star |
| Trampling with your horse | The rabbit for the Master Hunter challenge must not be trampled |
| Rotting carcass | A rotten carcass cannot be skinned, sold or carried |
The hunting challenges that require perfect pelts are covered on the RDR2 challenges page.
Buck Antler Trinket: the trinket for better pelts
The Fence crafts the Buck Antler Trinket from the antler of the Legendary Buck. You hunt it in Black Bone Forest (Big Valley, West Elizabeth) from Chapter 2, after the mission “Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego”.
The trinket improves the quality of pelts and animal parts. Only Red Dead Wiki describes the mechanic in detail: if the kill was “dirty”, the quality goes up by one star after skinning, but never above the animal’s original quality. The Wiki also suggests it may raise the chance of three-star animals spawning; other sources do not confirm this.
Carcasses rot: your horse, your satchel and the Pronghorn Horn Trinket
Carcasses rot over time, as Red Dead Wiki and Game Rant both note. A rotten carcass can no longer be skinned or sold. Carcasses on your horse spoil too. Whether skinned pelts on the horse lose quality is disputed: Game Rant says pelts degrade as well, while players say only the carcass rots.
- A deer pelt is rolled up and placed on the horse; big elk or bear pelts go on as a roll across the horse’s back. Neither Arthur nor the horse can carry the carcasses of such big animals (Wiki).
- Small pelts (badger, muskrat and so on) go into your satchel and, according to the Wiki, do not spoil.
- Reliable sources do not say how many pelts a horse can carry, so we give no number.
The Pronghorn Horn Trinket stops carcasses on your horse from spoiling. The horn comes from the Legendary Pronghorn near Río del Lobo Rock (New Austin), which is available only in the epilogue, so Arthur never gets this trinket.
Where to sell or hand in perfect pelts
| Buyer | What they take and give | Where and when |
|---|---|---|
| Pearson (camp) | Perfect pelts for satchels and camp decor; a carcass you hand in goes to camp provisions | Chapters 2–4 and 6; there is no camp in Chapter 5, and he is unavailable in the epilogue |
| Trapper | Buys pelts, carcasses, meat and legendary pelts; makes clothing and saddles from them (you still have to buy the items) | From Chapter 2: Saint Denis market, east of Riggs Station, west of Black Bone Forest, Roanoke Ridge west of Elysian Pool, Tall Trees (not available to Arthur) |
| Butcher | Buys pelts, parts and carcasses; the price depends on species and quality | Valentine, Saint Denis, Rhodes, Strawberry, Blackwater, Tumbleweed |
Before you sell:
- A perfect pelt is worth more than a poor one from the same animal.
- According to Red Dead Wiki, an unskinned carcass sells for twice as much: if Pearson or the Trapper does not need the pelt, hand the animal in whole.
- Do not sell perfect pelts that Pearson needs. Citing the official guide, the Wiki advises covering Pearson’s and the Trapper’s needs first.

Pearson’s satchels in brief
Pearson makes satchels only from perfect pelts; legendary ones do not count. First you need to buy Leather Working Tools in the camp Ledger for $225. Each satchel doubles the limit of its category, and the final Legend of the East raises most items to 99. All seven satchels together need 7 deer pelts, 2 elk pelts and one pelt each from 12 other animals. In the epilogue, John buys any satchels you did not craft from the Fence, no pelts required.
Recipes and requirements for each satchel are in the RDR2 satchel upgrades guide. Below is where to find the animals you need.
Where to hunt the animals for satchels
There are no fixed spawn points: animals appear at random within their habitat. The table lists spots that match in Red Dead Wiki and rdr2.org; single-source spots are marked.
| Animal | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Deer | Almost everywhere except New Austin; most common in the forests of Lemoyne, New Hanover and West Elizabeth |
| Buck | Almost everywhere; Lemoyne and northern New Hanover near the Ambarino border |
| Elk | Cold areas: Ambarino and northern New Hanover, from Tall Trees to Roanoke Ridge; mornings and evenings |
| Bison | The plains of New Hanover and West Elizabeth: west of Blackwater, Heartlands Overflow southwest of Annesburg; they move in herds |
| Raccoon | Almost everywhere except Cholla Springs, Rio Bravo and Gaptooth Ridge |
| Badger | Lemoyne, from the north down to Rhodes (rdr2.org only) |
| Squirrel | All forests, for example near Strawberry |
| Boar | Most common in the Lemoyne forests |
| Iguana | For Arthur, only the island in the east of Flat Iron Lake, west of Clemens Point |
| Panther | Lemoyne only, south of Rhodes. According to the Wiki, most often at Old Harry Fen, at night; a new panther spawns after 72 in-game hours |
| Beaver | The Kamassa River in Roanoke Ridge |
| Rabbit | Almost everywhere, including near Valentine, Strawberry, Rhodes and Saint Denis |
| Cougar | For Arthur, Big Valley and northern Roanoke Ridge; southwestern New Austin only in the epilogue |
| Wolf | West Elizabeth and Ambarino; at night, Grizzlies West near Cairn Lake |
Version differences
The pelt mechanics are the same in the original PS4 and Xbox One release (2018) and on PC (2019); only the study controls differ on PC. There is no separate native version for PS5 and Xbox Series, so everything works the same there. There is no mobile version of RDR2. In the Ultimate Edition, according to Red Dead Wiki, the Varmint Rifle is free. Everything here applies to Story Mode, not Red Dead Online.
RDR2 perfect pelts FAQ
How do you get perfect pelts in RDR2?
Study the animal and make sure it has three stars. Use the right weapon for its size and kill it with one shot to the head (the heart for a bear or bison). Before skinning, aim at the carcass: if it still shows three stars, the pelt will be perfect.
What is the best weapon to kill a deer in RDR2?
A deer is a big animal: a Springfield Rifle or a bow with poison or regular arrows, one shot to the head.
What should I use to kill a bear in RDR2?
A bear is a gigantic animal: a Rolling Block sniper rifle with regular ammo or a bow with Improved Arrows. Aim for the heart, because a bear’s skull is too thick.
Why isn’t my pelt perfect when the animal had three stars?
Usually because of a second shot, a weapon that was too powerful, a shotgun or explosive ammo.
Do pelts rot on your horse in RDR2?
Carcasses on the horse definitely rot; the sources disagree about skinned pelts. Get them to a buyer without delay. The Pronghorn Horn Trinket from the epilogue stops carcasses on your horse from spoiling.
Where do you sell perfect pelts in RDR2?
To the Trapper (Saint Denis and other spots) or a butcher in town. Before selling, check whether Pearson needs them for satchels.
