How RDR2 challenges work
Challenges are 90 story mode tasks: 9 categories of 10 ranks each. You will find the list in the pause menu under Progress → Challenges; the active challenge is marked with an icon in the top right corner of the screen. We number the ranks 1 to 10, the same as the game menu.
Ranks within a category unlock strictly in order: the next one appears once you complete the previous one. Anything you did before a rank was active does not count. Categories are independent of each other, so you can work on them in parallel.
There is no special mission that switches challenges on. A category starts with the first action of its rank 1: rob a passer-by and Bandit begins, pick yarrow and Herbalist begins, skin a deer and Master Hunter begins. You cannot miss a challenge — they stay available after the story.
The exceptions that need a story condition:
- Survivalist — according to Red Dead Wiki, the category opens when you catch a bluegill after the mission "A Fisher of Men" (Chapter 2); a fishing rod stolen earlier will not help.
- Bandit 6 — the horse fence at Clemens Cove appears after the mission "Horse Flesh for Dinner" (Chapter 3).
- Master Hunter 10 — the Giaguaro panther only appears after Master Hunter 9.
- Weapons Expert 2 — you get throwing knives in the mission "Paying a Social Call" (Chapter 2).
- Herbalist 7 — you need the Special Miracle Tonic recipe: from the Fence or on the plateau southeast of Vetter’s Echo.
- Sharpshooter 9 — per the wiki, you need Dead Eye that stays active after a shot (from the mission "Urban Pleasures", Chapter 4) or manual targeting (after "Pouring Forth Oil IV", Chapter 2).
Be careful with saves: per the wiki, loading a save resets the counter for "in one day" and "in a row" ranks — Bandit 3 and 4, Gambler 9, Survivalist 7. The game measures distance in feet and weight in pounds; the metric values in brackets are our rough conversion. Red Dead Online challenges are a separate system and are not part of these 90.
Rewards: Reinforced Equipment from the Trapper
Rank rewards work the same way in all 9 categories (according to Red Dead Wiki, TheGamer and rdr2.org):
- Ranks 1, 3, 7 and 10 each unlock one piece of Reinforced Equipment: a Bandolier, Gun Belt, Holster or Off-Hand Holster. The order differs from category to category — see the table.
- Ranks 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9 give core XP and cash: 25 XP and $5 for rank 2, 50 XP and $10 each for ranks 4–5, 100 XP and $15 each for ranks 6 and 8, and 150 XP and $20 for rank 9.
A rank only unlocks an item — you still have to buy it from the Trapper, under the Reinforced Equipment menu. Per the wiki, the bandolier holds more ammo for rifles, repeaters and shotguns, the gun belt does the same for revolvers and pistols, and the holster makes your weapons degrade more slowly.
| Category | Bandolier | Gun Belt | Holster | Off-Hand Holster | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bandit | $21.75 (rank 1) | $19.50 (rank 10) | $16.00 (rank 3) | $16.00 (rank 7) | $73.25 |
| Explorer | $34.75 (rank 3) | $31.25 (rank 7) | $25.25 (rank 1) | $25.25 (rank 10) | $116.50 |
| Gambler | $21.00 (rank 3) | $18.75 (rank 7) | $15.25 (rank 1) | $15.25 (rank 10) | $70.25 |
| Herbalist | $30.25 (rank 10) | $27.25 (rank 3) | $22.00 (rank 7) | $22.00 (rank 1) | $101.50 |
| Horseman | $17.75 (rank 7) | $16.00 (rank 1) | $13.00 (rank 3) | $13.00 (rank 10) | $59.75 |
| Master Hunter | $24.50 (rank 3) | $22.00 (rank 7) | $18.00 (rank 10) | $18.00 (rank 1) | $82.50 |
| Sharpshooter | $20.00 (rank 1) | $18.00 (rank 10) | $14.75 (rank 3) | $14.75 (rank 7) | $67.50 |
| Survivalist | $27.25 (rank 7) | $24.50 (rank 1) | $19.75 (rank 10) | $19.75 (rank 3) | $91.25 |
| Weapons Expert | $17.00 (rank 10) | $15.25 (rank 3) | $12.25 (rank 1) | $12.25 (rank 7) | $56.75 |
Prices come from the Trapper table on Red Dead Wiki; in your game they may differ, so check the menu.
Core bonus. Buy all 4 items from one category and you can raise the matching core to level 9; with the sets from all three of that core’s categories, up to level 10:
- Health — Horseman, Sharpshooter, Weapons Expert;
- Stamina — Bandit, Gambler, Master Hunter;
- Dead Eye — Explorer, Herbalist, Survivalist.
Legend of the East: the reward for all 90
Once you clear all 90 ranks, the Legend of the East outfit appears in your wardrobe automatically. According to Red Dead Wiki, its bonuses work even when you are not wearing it (some guides say you have to wear it): weapon condition +10%, money found +10%, melee and mounted damage taken −10%, Eagle Eye lasts 5 seconds longer, and cores drain 10% slower and gain 10% more XP.
The built-in cheat "Vanity. All is vanity" gives you the outfit right away, but with a cheat active the game will not save and achievements are blocked — details on the RDR2 cheats page.
Bandit challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Dead Eye, and the full equipment set boosts Stamina. The category drags your honor down hard — see how to win it back in our honor guide. Arthur can finish all of it.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hold up 5 townsfolk | Rob 5 passers-by: aim at them and choose "rob". | It is quieter in the back alleys of Saint Denis at night, or in Valentine or Strawberry. In the mission "Urban Pleasures" you can rob three people at the tram stop. |
| 2 | Rob any 2 coaches or return any 2 stolen coaches to the Fence | Loot the lockbox on a coach or sell a coach to the Fence. | Per the wiki, if you rob the lockbox and then sell the same coach, it counts twice. |
| 3 | Rob the cash register in any 4 shops in one day | Rob the registers of 4 shops in one in-game day. | Route: the doctor and the general store in Valentine, Wallace Station, Strawberry. Loading a save resets progress. |
| 4 | Rob any 3 coaches or return any 3 stolen coaches to the Fence in a day | Same as rank 2, but 3 coaches in one day. | Coach robberies during missions count too. |
| 5 | Amass $250 bounty in one state | Get a $250 bounty in a single state. | If you already have $250 or more on your head there, simply riding into the state is enough. |
| 6 | Steal 5 horses and sell them to the Horse Fence at Clemens Cove | Sell 5 stolen horses to the horse fence at Clemens Cove. | The fence appears after "Horse Flesh for Dinner" (Chapter 3). Per the wiki, broken wild horses count too — and your honor does not drop. He will not buy anything while you are under attack. |
| 7 | Rob $50 worth of cash and valuables from townsfolk and travelers | Rob people of $50 in cash and valuables in total. | The fastest way is first-class train passengers or wealthy Saint Denis residents. |
| 8 | Steal 7 wagons and sell them to the Fence at Emerald Ranch | Sell 7 stolen wagons to the fence at Emerald Ranch. | No witnesses and no active wanted level. |
| 9 | Hogtie someone and leave them on the railroad 3 times | Hogtie a person and place them on the tracks three times. | Put them between the rails; you do not need to wait for a train. It can be the same person all three times. |
| 10 | Complete 5 train robberies without dying or being caught | 5 train robberies without dying or getting arrested. | Per the wiki, the quiet version counts too: buy a ticket, steal something from the freight car and leave unseen. A cheap route is Valentine ↔ Emerald Station. |
Explorer challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Stamina, and the full equipment set boosts Dead Eye. Every map chain and treasure location is in our RDR2 treasure maps guide. How many finds each chain gives is based on Red Dead Wiki.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find a treasure map | Find your first treasure map. | The first map of any of the five chains works: Jack Hall Gang, Poisonous Trail, Landmarks of Riches, Le Trésor des Morts, The Elemental Trail. High Stakes cannot be the first. |
| 2 | Find a treasure | Find a treasure. | Both the final treasure and an intermediate map in a chain count. |
| 3 | Find a treasure | The next find. | The Torn Treasure Map and the Sketched Map do not count. |
| 4 | Find a treasure | The next find. | Jack Hall Gang gives 3 finds: the 2nd and 3rd maps and the treasure. |
| 5 | Find a treasure | The next find. | Poisonous Trail — 3 finds. |
| 6 | Find a treasure | The next find. | Landmarks of Riches — 4 finds. |
| 7 | Find a treasure | The next find. | High Stakes — 3 finds. |
| 8 | Find a treasure | The next find. | Le Trésor des Morts — 2 finds. |
| 9 | Find a treasure | The next find. | The Elemental Trail — 3 finds. |
| 10 | Find a treasure | The last, ninth find after the first map. | 3–4 chains are enough for all the finds, so Arthur can complete Explorer in full. |
Gambler challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Dead Eye, and the full equipment set boosts Stamina. This category holds two of the hardest ranks in the game — 8 and 10.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Win 5 hands of Poker | Win 5 hands of poker. | Poker in the mission "Who is Not Without Sin" counts too. |
| 2 | In Blackjack, double down and win the hand 5 times | Double down in blackjack and win 5 times. | Double down when your hand is over 10. |
| 3 | Win 3 games of Five Finger Fillet | Win at Five Finger Fillet three times. | Winning the first round against the first opponent is enough; in camp it costs $1 to play. |
| 4 | Bust one Poker location out in each location (Flatneck Station, Saint Denis, Valentine) | Knock one opponent out at each of three tables — so that they lose all their chips. | Tables: the Flatneck Station building, the Bastille Saloon in Saint Denis, Smithfield’s Saloon in Valentine. |
| 5 | Win 3 rounds of Dominoes without drawing any tiles against 2 or fewer opponents | Win a round of dominoes three times without drawing a tile, against 1–2 opponents. | Slow and down to luck. Play your biggest tiles and doubles first. Tables — Saint Denis, Emerald Station, camp. |
| 6 | Beat the Blackjack dealer in two locations (Rhodes and Van Horn) | Win a hand of blackjack in Rhodes and in Van Horn. | Rhodes Parlour House and the Old Light Saloon. |
| 7 | Beat the Five Finger Fillet player in every location (Strawberry, Valentine, Van Horn) | Beat a Five Finger Fillet player in three towns so that they leave the table. | In Valentine it is Keane’s Saloon; the player is not always there. |
| 8 | Win 3 hands of Blackjack with 3 hits or more | 3 blackjack wins after drawing at least 3 cards: 5 cards in hand and no more than 21. | The hardest in the category. Play the minimum bet in Rhodes; after a bad deal, stand up and sit down again. A good start is an ace plus cards 2–6. |
| 9 | Win 3 games of Dominoes in a row | 3 games of dominoes in a row — full games to 100 points, not rounds. | In camp in the morning (7:00–12:00) there is only one opponent. Saving does not keep your progress. |
| 10 | Win 3 hands of Poker in a row | Win 3 poker hands in a row. | Leaving the table resets the counter; a split pot counts as a win. Per the wiki, you can replay "A Fine Night of Debauchery" (Chapter 4) and "Who is Not Without Sin" (Chapter 2). |
Herbalist challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Health, and the full equipment set boosts Dead Eye. Rank 9 is the only challenge Arthur cannot complete.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick 6 Yarrow | Pick 6 Yarrow plants. | Red umbrella-shaped flower clusters grow all over the Heartlands, including near Horseshoe Overlook. |
| 2 | Pick and eat 4 species of berry | Pick and eat 4 kinds of berries. | Red Raspberry, Blackberry, Evergreen Huckleberry, Wintergreen Berry. |
| 3 | Craft 7 items using Sage as an ingredient | Craft 7 items using Sage. | They can be the same item: Potent Horse Stimulant (Sage + Common Bulrush) or Potent Bitters (Sage + Burdock Root). Oleander Sage does not count. |
| 4 | Pick 5 mushrooms and feed them to your horse | Pick 5 mushrooms and feed them to your horse. | One species is fine; mushrooms already in your satchel count too. |
| 5 | Craft 9 items using Indian Tobacco as an ingredient | Craft 9 items with Indian Tobacco. | The easiest is Potent Snake Oil: no recipe needed, one tobacco per item. |
| 6 | Pick 15 different species of herb | Pick 15 different plant species. | Per the wiki, do not pick too many orchids of one species before Algernon’s quest (see below). |
| 7 | Craft and use 5 Special Miracle Tonics | Craft and drink 5 Special Miracle Tonics. | You need the recipe. Five tonics take 30 each of Yarrow, Burdock Root and Golden Currant (or Blackcurrant); you cannot carry that without a bigger satchel (the Ingredients Satchel or the Legend of the East Satchel). |
| 8 | Use Oleander to craft 6 poison weapons | Craft 6 poison weapons using Oleander Sage. | Oleander Sage grows in Bayou Nwa. The easiest are poison throwing knives: the recipe is sold by the Fence or comes as a reward for the bison hunt with Charles in Chapter 2. |
| 9 | Pick one of each species of herb | Pick one plant of every species. | Epilogue only: Blackcurrant, Wild Feverfew, Desert Sage and Red Sage grow only in New Austin. The game has no checklist for this — keep your own. |
| 10 | Season and cook all 11 types of meat | Season and cook all 11 kinds of meat. | Season with Oregano, Creeping Thyme or Wild Mint. |
A trap for rank 9 (according to Red Dead Wiki): if you pick too many orchids of one species before the quest "Duchesses and other Animals" (Algernon Wasp, Chapter 4), some species stop spawning until you receive his request. The wiki also describes a bug where the Lady Slipper Orchid does not count towards Algernon’s 2nd request.
Horseman challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Stamina, and the full equipment set boosts Health. For breeds and where to catch them, see the RDR2 horses page.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kill 5 rabbits from horseback | Kill 5 rabbits without leaving your horse. | Shoot from the saddle or trample them. |
| 2 | Jump over 3 obstacles in 15 seconds | Jump 3 obstacles within 15 seconds. | The fences at Emerald Ranch. |
| 3 | Ride from Valentine to Rhodes in less than 5 minutes | Ride from Valentine to Rhodes in under 5 minutes. | Do not dismount, fall off or get into gunfights — otherwise the attempt resets. |
| 4 | While mounted, drag a victim for 3300 feet using your lasso | Drag a lassoed person 3,300 feet (≈1 km) while staying in the saddle. | The victim must be alive when you lasso them. To avoid a bounty, the wiki suggests picking an "unpleasant" NPC, such as the eugenics supporter. |
| 5 | Trample 5 animals while on horseback | Trample 5 animals with your horse. | The animal has to die from the hooves: chickens on farms, turkeys in the wild. |
| 6 | Ride from Strawberry to Saint Denis in less than 9 minutes without touching any water | Ride from Strawberry to Saint Denis in 9 minutes without touching water. | Per the wiki, it is best to go from Riggs Station along the railroad. |
| 7 | Kill 7 enemies from horseback without dismounting | Kill 7 enemies without leaving your horse. | A gang hideout such as Hanging Dog Ranch — no honor loss. |
| 8 | Kill 9 predators from horseback | Kill 9 predators from horseback. | The easiest are alligators with a sniper rifle: they are slow, and your horse panics less. |
| 9 | Ride from Van Horn to Blackwater in less than 17 minutes without touching any water | Ride from Van Horn to Blackwater in 17 minutes without touching water. | Dry bridges only; the only dry way over the Upper Montana River is by Owanjila Dam. The wiki suggests riding through Emerald Ranch, because the game may count the dry Dewberry Creek as a river. Pausing and the map do not count towards the time; a mule works, a donkey does not. |
| 10 | Break every wild horse breed | Tame every wild horse breed. | 9 breeds: American Paint, American Standardbred, Appaloosa, Hungarian Halfbred, Kentucky Saddler, Morgan, Mustang, Nokota, Tennessee Walker. Wild Thoroughbreds, Arabians and Andalusians are not needed. The game has a breed checklist; in the epilogue all of them roam New Austin. |
Master Hunter challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Health, and the full equipment set boosts Stamina. For the panther and other beasts, see the RDR2 legendary animals page.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Skin 3 deer | Skin 3 deer. | A whole deer carcass handed to Pearson or the Trapper counts too. |
| 2 | Collect 3 perfect quality rabbit pelts | Get 3 perfect rabbit pelts. | Surprisingly hard for rank 2: only the Varmint Rifle or small game arrows, a headshot, and do not trample it with your horse. |
| 3 | Track 10 different animal species using your binoculars | Track 10 animal species with binoculars. | Study the animal first, then hold "track" in the binoculars. Birds in flight and domestic animals do not count. |
| 4 | Call an animal and get a clean kill 5 times | Call an animal and kill it cleanly 5 times. | After "call" the animal raises its head — shoot it in the head with the right weapon. Legendary animals always count as "clean". |
| 5 | Skin 3 black or grizzly bears | Skin 3 black bears or grizzlies. | Quality does not matter; the legendary Bharati grizzly counts too. |
| 6 | Kill 5 cougars with your bow, then skin them | Kill 5 cougars with a bow and skin them. | Per the wiki, they do not have to be the same cougars. Before the epilogue, Roanoke Ridge has the most spawn points. |
| 7 | Use bait to lure and kill both a herbivore and predator | Lure and kill a herbivore and a predator with bait. | Find the animal first, then put the bait down and walk about 20 m away. The wiki suggests starting with the predator. |
| 8 | Catch 3 fish without using a fishing rod | Get 3 fish without a fishing rod. | A bow, throwing weapons, the Varmint Rifle in the shallows, or a horse trampling fish in shallow water. Dynamite destroys the fish. A quiet spot is the lagoon near Hani’s Bethel. |
| 9 | Catch an opossum playing possum | Kill an opossum that is playing dead. | Scare the opossum — it freezes, then shoot it. GamesRadar+ suggests picking it up by hand. |
| 10 | Find and kill the legendary panther “Giaguaro” | Track down and kill the legendary Giaguaro panther. | Appears only after rank 9: Scarlett Meadows (Lemoyne), south of Bolger Glade, close to the coast. Very aggressive — after 3 clues it hunts you itself. Bring a powerful weapon and predator bait, and shoot from high ground or from a wagon. |
Sharpshooter challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Dead Eye, and the full equipment set boosts Health. Which long-scoped rifle to take — see the RDR2 weapons page.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kill 3 flying birds | Shoot 3 birds in flight. | Any birds will do. |
| 2 | Kill 2 different species of animal in the same Dead Eye use | Kill 2 different animal species in one use of Dead Eye. | Both animals must die in the same Dead Eye. |
| 3 | Kill 5 flying birds while on a moving train | Shoot 5 birds from a moving train. | They do not all have to be at once. Per the wiki, stand on the front platform — the guards will not reach you. |
| 4 | Kill someone at least 80 feet away with a thrown tomahawk | Kill a person with a thrown tomahawk from 80 feet (≈24 m). | Enemy gang camps — no honor loss. |
| 5 | Kill 6 animals without switching or reloading your weapon | Kill 6 animals without switching or reloading your weapon. | A flock of ducks or geese with the Varmint Rifle, or two revolvers on chickens. Do it all in one Dead Eye — activating it again reloads your weapon. |
| 6 | Kill someone at least 660 feet away with a long scoped rifle | Kill a person from 660 feet (≈200 m) with a long-scoped rifle. | It has to be a long scope (Rolling Block, Carcano). Hanging Dog Ranch or the cliffs behind the Valentine church; the menu shows your best distance. |
| 7 | Get 7 headshots in a row | 7 headshots in a row. | Gang hideouts (Hanging Dog Ranch, Shady Belle, Fort Mercer) or slow animals — turtles, alligators in Bluewater Marsh. Dying resets the counter. |
| 8 | Disarm 3 enemies without reloading or switching your weapon | Disarm 3 enemies without reloading or switching weapons. | Aim at the hand or the weapon (the reticle is white, not red). Do not get on your horse: long arms go back to the saddle and the counter resets. An option from the wiki — a poison arrow to the leg. |
| 9 | Shoot 3 people’s hats off in the same Dead Eye use | Shoot the hats off 3 people in one use of Dead Eye. | Nobody can die. You need Dead Eye level 3 (Chapter 4) or manual targeting (from Chapter 2); in the epilogue the Del Lobo gang’s sombreros are handy. |
| 10 | Kill 3 flying birds with 3 consecutive long scoped rifle shots | Shoot 3 birds in flight with three consecutive long-scope shots. | A miss resets progress. |
Survivalist challenges: all 10 ranks
XP from these ranks goes to Stamina, and the full equipment set boosts Dead Eye. The category only opens after the mission "A Fisher of Men". Large and legendary fish are on the RDR2 legendary fish page.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Catch 3 Bluegill fish | Catch 3 bluegill. | Only after "A Fisher of Men"; use cheese as bait. |
| 2 | Hand 5 animals in to camp or the trapper | Hand in 5 carcasses to camp or the Trapper. | In camp, Pearson takes the carcasses. |
| 3 | Kill 5 animals with a varmint rifle | Kill 5 animals with the Varmint Rifle. | The rifle is sold at the gunsmith in Valentine. |
| 4 | Craft a dynamite, fire, improved, poison, and small game arrow | Craft one of each arrow: dynamite, fire, improved, poison and small game. | The recipes are sold by the Fence. |
| 5 | Catch a fish in the Bayou from a riverboat (boating) and while standing on train tracks | Catch a fish in the Bayou from a boat and a fish while standing on the railroad tracks. | Two parts; you can do them separately. |
| 6 | Kill a scavenging animal while it is feeding on a corpse 5 times | Kill a scavenger while it is eating a carcass, 5 times. | Leave a carcass out in an open field, wait for hawks or crows and use the bow. An animal on bait counts too. |
| 7 | Kill 8 small game animals with consecutive shots, using small game arrows | Kill 8 small animals in a row with small game arrows. | Things that reset it: a small game arrow on anything other than small game, a kill that takes more than one shot, another weapon, a miss, loading a save. Chickens near the Fence at Emerald Ranch, or rats in the cave behind the Elysian Pool waterfall or in Doyle’s Tavern. |
| 8 | Craft a homing tomahawk, improved tomahawk, volatile dynamite, and volatile fire bottle | Craft a homing tomahawk, an improved tomahawk, volatile dynamite and a volatile fire bottle. | The homing tomahawk needs an owl feather: owls only come out at night, and one often sits on the roof of Emerald Station. |
| 9 | Catch a fish that weighs at least 19 lbs | Catch a fish weighing 19 pounds (≈8.6 kg) or more. | The easiest are a legendary fish, a sturgeon or a muskie. |
| 10 | Catch one of each type of fish throughout the world | Catch one fish of every species. | Track progress in the Compendium. Whether legendary fish are needed — see the section on disagreements below. |
Weapons Expert challenges: all 10 ranks
Both the rank XP and the full equipment set bonus go to Health. For barrel upgrades and throwing weapons, see the RDR2 weapons page.
| Rank | In-game task | What to do | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kill 3 enemies with a knife | Kill 3 enemies with a knife. | Done through the story — the stealth kills in "Paying a Social Call". |
| 2 | Kill 3 enemies in 10 seconds using only throwing knives | Kill 3 enemies within 10 seconds using only throwing knives. | Replay "Paying a Social Call": at the start three O’Driscolls stand with their backs to you — Dead Eye and go for the heads. Per the wiki, animals such as chickens count too. |
| 3 | Kill 3 birds of prey using only a tomahawk | Kill 3 birds of prey with a tomahawk. | Eagles and owls perch in fixed spots; per the wiki, for example at the end of the pier at Swadbass Point. |
| 4 | Kill 10 enemies with a shotgun using crafted ammo | Kill 10 enemies with a shotgun using crafted shells. | Any crafted shotgun shells work (incendiary or explosive); a gang hideout is a convenient place. |
| 5 | Kill 5 mounted enemies, using 1 throwing knife per kill | Kill 5 riders with one throwing knife each. | Bounty hunters (get a small bounty) or, as Arthur, the Pinkertons in the Great Plains. |
| 6 | Kill 4 enemies at the same time with a single stick of dynamite | Kill 4 enemies with a single stick of dynamite. | Look for a cluster of enemies in a gang camp. |
| 7 | Kill 4 consecutive enemies by throwing and retrieving the same tomahawk | Kill 4 enemies in a row by throwing and picking up the same tomahawk. | Carry only 1 tomahawk. Wolves, cougars and bears do not count and reset progress. Per the wiki, you actually need 5 kills — the first one only starts the counter. |
| 8 | Kill 15 enemies using a long-barreled sidearm | Kill 15 enemies with a long-barreled revolver or pistol. | The trap: it has to be a sidearm with a long barrel — an upgrade from the gunsmith. A shotgun does not work; per the wiki, the LeMat revolver does not count either. |
| 9 | Kill 9 unaware enemies from behind, using the bow | Kill 9 enemies with a bow from behind before they spot you. | Hanging Dog Ranch — up to 5 guards without raising the alarm; or replay "Paying a Social Call" or "The King’s Son". |
| 10 | Kill a grizzly bear without taking damage, using only throwing knives | Kill a grizzly using only throwing knives without taking damage. | Poison knives and keep your distance. Grizzlies — Vetter’s Echo, between Watson’s Cabin and Wallace Station, plus an event near Cairn Lake. |
Arthur or John: what to leave for the epilogue
Arthur can complete 89 of the 90 challenges. The only one he cannot do is Herbalist 9: Blackcurrant, Wild Feverfew, Desert Sage and Red Sage grow only in New Austin, which Arthur cannot reach. So all 90 ranks, the Legend of the East outfit and 100% in RDR2 are finished in the epilogue, as John.
Progress does not reset: according to Red Dead Wiki, John picks up whatever Arthur did not finish. Whether the equipment Arthur bought and his core bonuses carry over to John is not confirmed by the sources.
What is easier to leave for the epilogue (per the wiki):
- Horseman 10 — every required breed roams New Austin;
- Sharpshooter 9 — the Del Lobo gang’s sombreros;
- Sharpshooter 7, Weapons Expert 8 and 9 — the Fort Mercer and Gaptooth Breach hideouts;
- Bandit 1 — lawless Armadillo.
Guides disagree on Horseman 9: PowerPyx says it cannot be done before the epilogue, while Red Dead Wiki says it can, although the Pinkertons hound Arthur in Tall Trees and the Great Plains. Bottom line: Arthur can do it, but it is easier as John.
The hardest ranks and how to beat them
According to the guides, seven ranks eat up the most time and patience. Detailed tips are in the tables above.
- Gambler 8 — 5 cards in blackjack and no more than 21, three times. Minimum bet in Rhodes; reseat after a bad deal.
- Gambler 10 — 3 poker wins in a row; do not leave the table.
- Master Hunter 2 — 3 perfect rabbit pelts: Varmint Rifle, headshots only.
- Horseman 9 — 17 minutes without water; cross the Upper Montana River by Owanjila Dam.
- Herbalist 9 — every plant species with no in-game checklist; keep your own list.
- Weapons Expert 10 — a grizzly with throwing knives alone and no damage taken; poison knives and distance.
- Weapons Expert 8 — you need a long-barreled revolver or pistol, not a shotgun.
Where the guides disagree
- Weapons Expert 8. Red Dead Wiki and TheGamer give the text "long-barreled sidearm" — a revolver or pistol with a long barrel. Some guides, including GamesRadar+, rdr2.org and PowerPyx, write "long barrelled shotgun", but a shotgun does not count for this challenge.
- Gambler 4. The game words the task awkwardly ("Bust one Poker location out…"); what it means is knocking out one opponent at each of three tables.
- Gambler 8. PowerPyx talks about four cards totaling 18 to 21; Red Dead Wiki says 5 cards (2 dealt + 3 drawn). We go with 5.
- Master Hunter 8 and 9. Sources have both "Catch 3 small fish" and "Catch 3 fish", and for the opossum both "Kill" and "Catch". The point is the same.
- Survivalist 10. According to Red Dead Wiki, a legendary fish counts as a regular species but is not required separately; GamesRadar+ believes legendary fish are needed as well. We have not verified the wiki’s version.
- Herbalist 9. Red Dead Wiki and GamerGuides count 43 species including 13 orchids, while rdr2.org lists 30 herbs without orchids. The orchids are needed too.
- Herbalist 10. Guides name the 11 kinds of meat differently, so we do not list them — check the game menu.
- Horseman 2. Different wiki pages give the reward as 25 or 20 XP.
Differences between game versions
The challenge list is the same on PS4 and Xbox One (2018) and on PC (2019); the sources record no patch changes to the story challenges. One known difference concerns weapons: the LeMat revolver, added to the story later as a bonus for the PC version and the Ultimate Edition, does not count for Weapons Expert 8, according to Red Dead Wiki. There is no data on differences in the mobile version or the new re-releases.

RDR2 challenges FAQ
What is the RDR2 challenges list and how many are there?
There are 90 story mode tasks: 9 categories (Bandit, Explorer, Gambler, Herbalist, Horseman, Master Hunter, Sharpshooter, Survivalist, Weapons Expert) of 10 ranks each. You will find the list in the pause menu under Progress → Challenges. You need all of them for 100%.
How do you complete Weapons Expert 8 in RDR2?
Kill 15 enemies with a long-barreled revolver or pistol — the gunsmith fits the barrel upgrade. A shotgun does not count, despite what some guides say; neither does the LeMat revolver, according to Red Dead Wiki. Per the wiki, Fort Mercer and Gaptooth Breach are handy spots for it in the epilogue.
How do you complete Gambler 8 in RDR2?
Win a hand of blackjack three times after drawing at least 3 cards — that is, with 5 cards in hand and no more than 21. Play the minimum bet in Rhodes and reseat if the deal is bad; the best start is an ace plus cards 2–6.
Why is my RDR2 challenge not counting?
Most often because the rank is not active yet: ranks unlock in order, and anything done before activation does not count. For "in one day" and "in a row" ranks, loading a save resets the counter, per the wiki. Survivalist only opens after the mission "A Fisher of Men".
Can Arthur complete all RDR2 challenges?
No, only 89 of 90. Herbalist 9 requires plants that grow only in New Austin, so that challenge — and the Legend of the East outfit — are available in the epilogue, as John.
What do you get for RDR2 challenges?
Ranks 1, 3, 7 and 10 unlock Reinforced Equipment that you buy from the Trapper; the other ranks give core XP and $5–20. Full sets raise cores to level 9–10, and for all 90 ranks you get the Legend of the East outfit.
