First check the time: the game may not have unlocked yet
Rockstar hasn't announced an unlock time, only the date, November 19, 2026. According to the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings, the game unlocks at midnight local time in each region: in the UK that's 12:00 AM GMT (00:00 UTC) on November 19, and in the US it's 12:00 AM Eastern Time for the whole country (05:00 UTC).
If the game is already downloaded but won't start before then, that's normal: pre-loaded files only unlock at the moment of release. A table of unlock times for different countries is on the GTA 6 release date page.
Pre-loading hasn't started
According to Rockstar Newswire on November 3:
- PS5: from midnight local time on November 10;
- Xbox Series X|S: from 00:00 GMT on November 10 for all regions (7:00 PM ET on November 9 in the US);
- boxed copies with a code go on sale on November 12, and the download starts once you redeem the code.
What to check if the download hasn't started:
- The game was bought on the same account you're signed in with on the console.
- The game is in your library: on PS5 under Game Library → Your Collection, on Xbox under My games & apps. If it didn't start automatically, start the download manually from the game's page.
- The console stays connected to the internet in rest mode (PS5) or sleep (Xbox). On PS5 this is turned on under Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
A full plan for launch is in our guide on how to get ready for GTA 6.
Not enough storage space
Officially, GTA 6 takes up up to 212 GB depending on your device; Rockstar hasn't given separate figures for PS5 and Xbox. We advise freeing up 250 GB or more, leaving room for a possible day-one patch. That's our editorial advice, not a Rockstar requirement.
- PS5: free space is shown under Settings → Storage; PS5 games can't run from a USB drive, only from the internal SSD or an additional M.2 SSD.
- Xbox Series X|S: free space is shown under Profile & system → Settings → System → Storage devices; "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" games only run from the internal SSD or an expansion card.
How to free up space and what to buy for expansion is on the GTA 6 file size page.
License error or "game unavailable"
PS5. If the console says it can't verify the license, go to Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses. If the game was bought on one account and another user will play on the console, turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5 in the same section.
Xbox Series X|S. Make sure you're signed in to the account that bought the game and that this console is set as your home console: Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox.
The code from the box won't redeem. PlayStation codes are tied to your account's region: according to Rockstar's help page, North America, the UK, Brazil and Latin America each have their own group, while Germany, Poland and many other countries share the "Rest of EMEA and Asia" group. A code from a different group won't work on your account. Xbox codes have no regional restrictions. Where to buy the game officially is on the how to get GTA 6 page.
Servers and network: what to check
GTA 6 is a single-player game: Rockstar says outright it's a "single player experience", and there's no separate online mode at launch. Rockstar hasn't said whether the story requires a constant internet connection; you'll definitely need the internet and a PlayStation Network or Xbox account to download the game and patches.
If you can't buy, download or verify the game, check the official status pages first:
If there's an outage, the problem isn't your console, and all you can do is wait for the service to come back. There's no need to reinstall the game in that case.
System updates and the day-one patch
Before November 10, update your console's system software: on PS5 under Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings, on Xbox under Settings → System → Updates. That way, on launch night the console won't hold up the game because of a required system update.
Rockstar hasn't said anything about a day-one patch. The official "up to 212 GB" is the size of the pre-load file. If a patch comes out, the console will download it automatically while connected to the internet, or ask you to install it before launching, so keep it online on launch night.
Download stuck or very slow
Millions of people will be downloading up to 212 GB in the first hours of pre-loading and release, so slow speeds at peak hours are normal. What to do if the download won't move:
- Check the status of PlayStation Network or Xbox services, using the links above or on the GTA 6 server status page. If there's an outage, all you can do is wait.
- Pause and resume the download. PS5: Downloads/Uploads in the control center. Xbox: My games & apps → Manage → Queue.
- Connect your console with a cable instead of Wi-Fi: with large files the difference is noticeable.
- Let the console download overnight. PS5: Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode → Stay Connected to the Internet. Xbox: the Sleep power mode (not Shutdown (energy saving)), so downloads continue while the console is off.
- Fully restart the console: not into rest mode, but off and back on.
- Don't delete it or start over if the download is just slow: you may lose progress and have to download it all again.
Game crashes, freezes or won't save progress
The first days after a big game's release usually bring patches, so Rockstar will fix some of the crashes itself. What you can do yourself:
- Update the game and the console. Make sure you have the latest version of GTA 6 and the latest system software installed.
- Keep some free space. When storage is packed to the limit, games are more likely to fail when saving and updating.
- PS5: rebuild the database. Turn off the console and hold the power button until the second beep: the PS5 will start in Safe Mode. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database. Your games and saves are not deleted.
- Xbox: fully restart the console by holding the Xbox button on the console for about 10 seconds until it turns off, then turning it back on.
- Don't turn off the console while saving. Wait until the save icon disappears.
- Cloud saves. On PS5 with PS Plus, saves are uploaded to the cloud; on Xbox they sync through your Microsoft account. Make sure this is turned on so your progress isn't lost.
Rockstar hasn't explained how GTA 6 itself saves progress (autosaves, safehouses, manual slots). We'll check after release and add it to the log below. If a crash keeps happening in the same place, report it to Rockstar Support.
Step by step: if GTA 6 won't launch
- Check the time. Until 12:00 AM local time on November 19 the game stays locked, even after a full download.
- Check the download. The download list should show 100%, with no unfinished updates.
- Check the status of PSN, Xbox and Rockstar using the links above.
- Restore your license on PS5, or check your home console and account on Xbox.
- Fully turn off the console, not into rest mode or sleep, and turn it back on.
- Check your storage: updates need room too.
- Reinstall only as a last resort: that's another download of up to 212 GB.
- Contact support: Rockstar Support, PlayStation or Xbox support, depending on where the error occurred.
Don't download "fixes", "cracks" or "launchers" for GTA 6 from third-party sites: consoles don't need them, and scammers spread malware disguised as GTA 6. More on the GTA 6 mobile page.
