How to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order and get your money back. On PS5 refunds apply only until the game starts downloading, so November 10 is the last safe day. On Xbox you cancel online before release. Plus the boxed code, bonuses and GTA+.
In short: how long you have to change your mind
The PS5 rule is simple: you get your money back as long as the game hasn't started downloading. GTA 6 pre-loading begins at midnight local time on November 10, and from that moment a console with automatic downloads enabled will start downloading on its own. Xbox pre-order rules have no such limit: you can cancel until the game is released.
| How you bought it | Before November 10 | November 10–18 | After release on November 19 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5, PlayStation Store | Cancel for a refund if the download hasn't started | Only if the game hasn't downloaded (pre-load turned off) | 14 days from purchase and only without downloading; otherwise only if the game is faulty |
| Xbox, Microsoft Store | Cancel in your order history | Cancel before release; if you've been charged, it's processed as a refund | Refund request within 14 days if you've played little; not guaranteed |
| Boxed copy (code) | Retailer's policy | Retailer's policy | Retailer's policy |
This table is a short version of PlayStation's and Microsoft's official policies as of November 5, 2026. These policies don't limit your statutory consumer rights in your country.
How to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order on PS5
PlayStation Store's cancellation policy for digital pre-orders:
- Paid more than 14 days before release (for GTA 6, before November 5): you can cancel at any time before November 19 and get a refund.
- Paid later: you can cancel within 14 days after payment was taken.
- Started downloading the main game, including pre-loading: no refund unless the game is faulty.
How to request it: use the refunds page on PlayStation Support — you'll need your Online ID, your account email and the name of the purchase. Some purchases can be cancelled yourself in your account's transaction history. The UK and EU also have a separate cancellation form.
If you're undecided, turn off automatic downloads in your PS5 settings before November 10. According to PlayStation, with the feature on the download starts automatically, and you can no longer cancel for a refund.
How to cancel a pre-order on Xbox
Under Microsoft Store rules you can cancel a digital pre-order online:
- Sign in to your Microsoft account and open your order history (account.microsoft.com → Payment & billing → Order history).
- Find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Cancel.
- If there's no Cancel option, you've already been charged. Before release, such a cancellation is handled as a refund through Microsoft Store Support.
Microsoft may charge for a pre-order up to 10 days before release — for GTA 6, from around November 9. If you pay with your account balance, you're charged immediately.
After release, Xbox refunds are requested through the Xbox refund request page. They're usually approved if you ask within 14 days of purchase and haven't played much, but there's no guarantee.
Want a different edition? On Xbox you don't have to cancel: the Xbox Store sells an Ultimate Edition upgrade. Details on the GTA 6 price and editions page.
Boxed version: who to contact
The Standard Edition box contains a download code, not a disc. Returns follow the policy of the store you bought it from:
- Rockstar Store: physical products are sold and fulfilled by Rockstar's partner Xsolla. You can cancel the pre-order through Xsolla's help pages, and Rockstar Support can help with the request.
- Any other store: Rockstar recommends contacting the retailer directly.
The box goes on sale on November 12. If you plan to return it, don't redeem the code — once redeemed, the purchase is tied to your account and the store may refuse.
What happens to the bonuses and GTA+
- Vintage Vice City Pack (Vapid Stanier sedan with a garage, outfits and a weapon pattern) comes with every purchase made before November 20. Cancel the pre-order and the bonus goes too; PlayStation's policy says pre-order extra content stops working once you cancel.
- One month of GTA+ comes with digital pre-orders. After the free month the membership renews automatically, so cancel it separately if you don't want to pay.
The full list of bonuses is in our GTA 6 launch checklist.
Before you cancel
People often cancel because they worry the game won't run well or won't fit. Check that first:
- the game takes up to 212 GB — how much space to free up;
- Xbox Series S is on the official platform list — GTA 6 platforms;
- critic scores are reportedly due on November 18 — GTA 6 reviews and scores.
Mind the dates: on PS5 the chance of a refund ends once the download starts, which for most people is November 10.
GTA 6 cancellation and refund FAQ
Can I cancel my GTA 6 pre-order on PS5?
Yes, as long as the game hasn't started downloading. A pre-order paid more than 14 days before release can be cancelled for a refund until November 19. Once the download starts, including the November 10 pre-load, there's no refund unless the game is faulty.
Can I get a refund if GTA 6 has already downloaded?
On PS5, no — except for a faulty game. On Xbox you can request a refund within 14 days of purchase after release if you've played little; approval isn't guaranteed.
How do I stop my PS5 from downloading GTA 6 automatically?
Turn off automatic downloads in the console settings before November 10. The game then won't download by itself, and you keep the option to cancel until you start the download manually.
When will Xbox charge me for the pre-order?
Under Microsoft's rules, up to 10 days before release — from around November 9. Payments from your account balance are taken immediately.
Can I switch from Standard to Ultimate without cancelling?
On Xbox, yes — the Xbox Store sells an Ultimate Edition upgrade. On PS5 there's no separate upgrade, so to get Ultimate you'd have to cancel Standard under the rules above.
Do I keep the Vintage Vice City Pack if I cancel?
No. The bonus is tied to the game purchase. If you buy the game again before November 20, the new purchase gets the bonus.
