The main GTA 4 characters, Niko and Roman Bellic, Little Jacob, Brucie, the McReary family, Dimitri Rascalov and Pegorino, with their story roles, voice actors, friend abilities and the protagonists of both episodes.
What GTA 4 is about
Niko Bellic is a former soldier who comes to Liberty City to join his cousin Roman. Roman runs the Express Car Service cab company in Hove Beach and owes money to the loan shark Vlad. Niko has his own goal: to find the man who betrayed his unit.
While he searches, Niko works for loan sharks, Bohan dealers, the McReary family, the Pegorino and Gravelli mafia families and the mysterious United Liberty Paper. Who gives which mission is shown in the GTA 4 mission list.

Who gives the most missions
We counted who gives the 85 shared missions, using the GTABase numbering. Niko's cousin has the most work for him: Roman carries the whole first part of the game.
| Character | Missions | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Roman Bellic | 10 | from The Cousins Bellic to Roman's Sorrow; in the finale, also the wedding in Mr. & Mrs. Bellic |
| Ray Boccino | 7 | the diamond deal, the hunt for Florian |
| Francis, Packie and Gerald McReary | 5 each | the McReary family strand; Derrick gives 3 more |
| Jimmy Pegorino | 5 | Alderney and the last shared mission, One Last Thing |
| Vlad, Faustin, Brucie, Elizabeta Torres, Phil Bell, United Liberty Paper | 4 each | — |
| Manny Escuela, Playboy X, Bernie Crane, Jon Gravelli | 3 each | — |
| Little Jacob, Dimitri, Dwayne Forge | 2 each | Jacob also gives the last mission of each ending |
Michelle (First Date) and Mallorie (Hostile Negotiation) give one mission each. GTABase credits That Special Someone to Niko himself, GTA Wiki to United Liberty Paper.
Niko's friends and what friendship gives you
In GTA 4 you can be friends with some characters: call them and hang out. Once their like level is high enough, a friend unlocks a special ability.
| Friend | How to unlock | Special ability |
|---|---|---|
| Roman | complete First Date and Bleed Out | taxi |
| Little Jacob | complete Shadow | discounted guns from a car trunk |
| Brucie | complete No. 1 | helicopter |
| Packie McReary | complete Three Leaf Clover | car bomb |
| Dwayne Forge | kill Playboy X in The Holland Play | backup: a car with two armed men |
Dwayne only becomes a friend with one choice: if you kill him in The Holland Play, there is no friendship, but Niko gets $25,000. Dwayne sends backup once his like level is high (75% or more, per GTA Wiki). Friendship is worth 10% of 100% completion (per GTABase); you need 6 hangouts with Little Jacob, 7 with Brucie and 6 with Packie. The full list is on the GTA 4 100% completion page.
Niko’s girlfriends and what dating gives
Niko meets two girlfriends through the story and three more on the in-game internet, on the dating sites love-meet.net and craplist.net. Online dating unlocks after the mission Out of the Closet (Brucie).
| Girlfriend | How to meet her | Bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Michelle | the mission First Date | none |
| Kate McReary | after the mission Waste Not Want Knots | none |
| Carmen Ortiz | dating site; she lives in Bohan, so dates are available right after Out of the Closet | a call gives medical advice and a health boost |
| Kiki Jenkins | dating site; she lives in Algonquin, so dates open after Blow Your Cover | a call clears a wanted level of up to 3 stars |
| Alex Chilton | dating site; she lives in Algonquin, so dates open after Blow Your Cover | 50% off at clothing stores |
GTA Wiki and StrategyWiki both confirm these bonuses. They unlock once a girlfriend’s like level is high (80% or more, per GTA Wiki); if it drops below 15%, she stops dating Niko. Per GTA Wiki, Alex’s discount is activated by a call and lasts 24 in-game hours. Carmen’s ability does not treat gunshot wounds: it only works if Niko has not been shot since he was last healed. Girlfriends are not needed for 100%.
Who dies at the end (spoilers)
Warning: ending spoiler. After One Last Thing the player chooses between a deal with Dimitri (Deal) and revenge (Revenge). In Deal, Dimitri's hitman accidentally kills Roman at his wedding. In Revenge, Pegorino strikes back and Kate McReary dies at the wedding. Either way, Niko then hunts down the one responsible. How both branches play out is covered on the GTA 4 missions page.
Episodes from Liberty City protagonists
The two expansions follow other people in the same city, and their paths cross Niko's. Johnny appears in the missions Blow Your Cover and Museum Piece, Luis in Museum Piece as well.
| Character | Game | Who they are | Voice actor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johnny Klebitz | The Lost and Damned | protagonist; vice president of The Lost MC from Alderney | Scott Hill |
| Billy Grey | The Lost and Damned | president of The Lost MC; comes back from rehab and wrecks the truce Johnny kept | Lou Sumrall |
| Luis Fernando Lopez | The Ballad of Gay Tony | protagonist; Tony Prince's bodyguard and partner | Mario D'Leon |
| Anthony "Gay Tony" Prince | The Ballad of Gay Tony | owner of the Maisonette 9 and Hercules nightclubs, Luis's employer and friend | David Kenner (credited as D.B. Cooper) |
