How many missions are in GTA 4

By the count of GTABase and GTA Wiki, GTA 4 has 88 story missions in one playthrough. That is 85 shared missions plus three more that depend on the ending you choose. Replay the finale and finish both branches, and you get 91 missions: GTABase counts it exactly that way.

GTA Wiki puts four missions, No. 1, Ruff Rider, Undress to Kill and The Holland Play, in a separate optional group: you can play them before or after the finale. GTABase keeps them in the main list. The total does not change: both sources include these four in the 88.

For 100% completion the story matters most: 60% of the overall score. Here the sources differ slightly. GTABase says all 88 missions are required, while iGrandTheftAuto says 86 count towards the percentage and One Last Thing is not one of them. For everything else you need for 100%, see the GTA 4 100% completion page.

How to read the list

GTA 4 has no strict mission order. Missions from different characters are often available at the same time, and a fixed order only applies within one character's strand. That is why guides number them differently: GTA Wiki groups missions by character, so Concrete Jungle is 8th there rather than 12th. We use the GTABase numbering.

Mission names are given as they appear in the game. Who gives each mission follows GTABase. Rewards mostly follow GTA Wiki, so other guides may show slightly different amounts. "In gun shops" means the weapon becomes available in the Underground Gun Shops. Islands and mission start points are easiest to see on the GTA 4 map.

The “Reward” column also lists achievements (trophies) for specific missions, per GTA Wiki and GTABase. The achievement for the finale, You Won!, comes with the last mission of either ending.

Broker and Dukes: the beginning (1–27)

Niko arrives to stay with his cousin Roman and almost immediately gets dragged into Roman's debts. The first missions come from Roman, the loan shark Vlad, Little Jacob, Faustin's gang in Hove Beach and Brucie. After Roman's Sorrow the cousins move to South Bohan.

Story choices

Several times GTA 4 lets you decide someone's fate. Most of these choices only affect small things: random encounters, money or a friend. The big one is the last.

Two endings: Deal and Revenge (spoilers)

Warning: ending spoilers ahead. After One Last Thing two missions appear on the radar: If the Price is Right (the deal with Dimitri) and A Dish Served Cold (revenge on Dimitri). Whichever one you start decides the last three missions.

#DealRevenge
86If the Price is Right — Jimmy Pegorino, $250,000A Dish Served Cold — Niko
87Mr. & Mrs. Bellic — RomanMr. & Mrs. Bellic — Roman
88A Revenger's Tragedy — Little JacobOut of Commission — Little Jacob, $250,000 and the "You Won!" achievement

Deal. Dimitri betrays Niko again and kills Pegorino. At Roman's wedding Dimitri's hitman accidentally kills Roman. Niko tracks Dimitri down and kills him.

Revenge. Niko kills Dimitri aboard the Platypus. Pegorino takes revenge: Kate McReary dies at the wedding. Niko tracks Pegorino down and kills him.

Both endings pay $250,000, but at different points: Deal in the first final mission, Revenge in the last one. Who is who in this story is covered on the GTA 4 characters page.

Missions in the Complete Edition

The story missions in GTA IV: The Complete Edition (2020) are the same as in the 2008 release. The re-release changed other things: Games for Windows Live and multiplayer were removed, and three radio stations disappeared because of licensing. More on the GTA 4 page.

Episodes from Liberty City missions

  • The Lost and Damned — 22 story missions about biker Johnny Klebitz. The first is Clean and Serene, the last is Get Lost.
  • The Ballad of Gay Tony — 26 story missions about Luis Lopez, ending with Departure Time. This is where percentage ratings for mission performance first appeared.

The stories of the three games overlap. Johnny and Playboy X appear in Blow Your Cover, Johnny and Luis in Museum Piece, and the diamond storyline runs from Taking in the Trash to the mission Diamonds in the Rough in The Ballad of Gay Tony.

GTA 4 missions FAQ

How many missions are in GTA 4?

88 story missions in one playthrough: 85 shared and 3 final missions of the ending you choose. With both endings, 91.

Where can I find the GTA 4 mission list in order?

The first mission is The Cousins Bellic, the last shared one is One Last Thing (#85), followed by the three missions of the chosen ending. In GTABase numbering the missions come in five blocks: Broker and Dukes (1–27), Bohan (28–34), Algonquin (35–51), the McReary brothers and Ray Boccino (52–68), Alderney (69–85). The game has no single order: missions from different characters can be played in parallel.

Which ending should I choose in GTA 4?

It comes down to which of Niko's loved ones you want to keep. In Deal (the deal with Dimitri) Roman dies, in Revenge Kate does. Both branches pay $250,000. To see both, save to a separate slot before One Last Thing.

What is the last mission in GTA 4?

It depends on the ending: Out of Commission in Revenge, A Revenger's Tragedy in Deal. Both are given by Little Jacob.

When do Algonquin and Alderney unlock?

Algonquin after Blow Your Cover (an Elizabeta Torres mission), Alderney after Three Leaf Clover (a Packie McReary mission).

How many missions are in The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony?

22 story missions in The Lost and Damned and 26 in The Ballad of Gay Tony.
