You can rob almost anything in GTA 6: here's how robberies work

Updated: 06.11.2026 Author: Alex Rayne

GTA 6 robberies: stores, gas stations, jewelry stores, banks, a microloan office and the police impound lot. How to rob quietly without setting off the alarm, how Jason and Lucia's joint jobs work, marked cash and fences. Only what Rockstar has shown and the developer has said.

In short
  • "You can rob pretty much anything" is how Rob Nelson of Rockstar North described robberies in GTA 6 in an interview with IGN.
  • Rockstar's videos show robberies of convenience stores, gas stations and a phone store. Nelson also named banks, a microloan office and the police impound lot.
  • Going in quietly pays off: use the back entrance, open the lock without a sound, switch off the cameras, and the police may not show up at all.
  • Jason and Lucia work as a pair: one drives while the other shoots, and you can send one of them to deliver the loot.
  • Stealing it isn't enough, you have to offload it: marked cash from a bank and drugs from gang stashes go to fences.

What's officially known about robberies

Rockstar hasn't published a dedicated article about robberies. They appear in the Extended Look video (August 27, 2026), and the details come from Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson in interviews with Famitsu (September) and IGN (October). The New York Times described some more. Details from the interviews refer to a preview build and may change before the November 19 release.

Rockstar hasn't said how much money each robbery pays. Figures like "how much a jewelry store pays" on other sites are estimates from previews, not official data.

How to rob quietly

The main difference from GTA 5 is that you only get a wanted level if someone sees the crime or an alarm goes off. So a quiet robbery in GTA 6 isn't just a style choice, it's a way to avoid a chase altogether. Nelson described these techniques to Famitsu:

  1. Use the back entrance. Smashing through the front door sets off the alarm.
  2. Open the lock quietly with a special tool (a snap gun).
  3. Switch off the cameras and security before the alarm goes off. In the Famitsu example, this made it possible to take the money with no police response at all.
  4. Get by without casualties. You can scare people with shots fired near them (suppressive fire) and leave without killing anyone.
  5. Don't take too long. If you linger, the police may surround the store or bank and wait for you at the entrance.

In the IGN demo, Nelson opened a safe after finding the combination and explained that explosives can ruin part of the loot. When the police did arrive, he left through the back door. How to lose a wanted level after a robbery is explained on the GTA 6 wanted level page.

Robbing as a duo: Jason and Lucia

Jason and Lucia are a criminal couple, and it shows in the mechanics. According to Nelson:

  • on a single job one character drives while the other shoots;
  • you can send one of the characters to deliver the loot, for example sending Lucia on her own;
  • after a job you can split the characters up or switch to another car to throw the police off your trail.

Switching between characters is locked or automatic in some missions and free in others. For the characters' relationship and roles, see the GTA 6 characters page.

What to do with the loot

A robbery in GTA 6 doesn't end when you walk out of the store. Part of the loot still has to be turned into money:

  • Marked bills from a bank, according to the NYT, have to be taken to a fence: you can't spend them right away.
  • Drugs from gang stashes go to a fence, Nelson says.
  • Stolen cars are sold to a fence or registered in your name at Pay 'n' Spray. A damaged car is worth less.

Most importantly, after "Wasted" or "Busted" the character loses all the cash they're carrying. Money in the bank account stays, so it's best to deposit your loot right away. How banking works on the phone is covered on the GTA 6 phone and apps page.

Robberies and the story

Nelson explained to Famitsu that story missions alone won't be enough to move the story forward: at certain points the story waits until you've earned the required amount. Robberies in the open world are one of the main ways to do that, along with selling stolen cars.

Rockstar hasn't revealed which big heists are in the story, to avoid spoilers. Lists of "all GTA 6 heists" on other sites are based on guesswork or leaked material, and we don't publish them. Once the game is out, we'll update this page with verified information. For other ways to earn, see our guide on how to make money in GTA 6.

What can you rob in GTA 6?

"Pretty much anything", according to Rob Nelson. The videos show robberies of convenience stores, gas stations and a phone store. The developer also named jewelry stores, banks, a microloan office and the police impound lot.

Can you rob a bank in GTA 6?

Yes, small banks can be robbed solo or as a duo. According to the NYT, marked bills from a bank have to be taken to a fence.

How do you rob a store without the police showing up?

Go in through the back entrance, open the lock quietly, switch off the cameras and security before the alarm, and don't take too long. The police only respond to witnesses and alarms.

How much money does a robbery pay in GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn't given any amounts. Figures on other sites are estimates from previews. We'll check after the game comes out on November 19.

Will there be big heists in the story?

Rockstar hasn't revealed them. Lists of "all heists" before release are guesswork or leaked material.
