How the wanted level works in GTA 6: police only respond to witnesses, remember your description and play style, and changing clothes, cars and weapons helps you lose the heat. What Rockstar confirmed, what we know from previews and how it differs from GTA 5.

What's officially known about the GTA 6 wanted level
Rockstar hasn't published a dedicated breakdown of the police. Everything we know comes from the 26-minute Extended Look video (August 27, 2026, captured on PS5), interviews with Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson for Famitsu (September) and IGN (October), and The New York Times preview. Below we separate what the video shows from what the developer said: interview details describe a preview build and may change before the November 19 release.
| What | How it works | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Wanted stars | An on-screen meter of five stars, like in GTA 5 | Rockstar video |
| Witnesses | You only get a wanted level if you were seen or an alarm went off | Nelson (Famitsu), NYT |
| Suspect description | Police know what you look like; changing clothes, leaving the area and dumping your weapon lower suspicion | Famitsu, NYT |
| Criminal profile | The game remembers your style: aggression → harsher response | Famitsu, NYT |
| Focus | A scan mode that highlights, among other things, nearby police | Nelson (IGN) |
| Split up | Separate the two leads or switch cars to throw police off your trail | Nelson (IGN) |
| Cash loss | After "Wasted" or "Busted" — all cash on hand | Nelson (Famitsu) |
Some outlets talk about a "sixth star" and color-coded wanted icons. Rockstar hasn't announced either, and some of those descriptions rely on unofficial UI images. Until the game is out, we treat those details as unverified.
Why police now respond only to witnesses
In GTA 5, stars appeared almost instantly: fire a shot on the street and the police "knew" about it even with nobody around. In GTA 6, according to Nelson, you get a wanted level only if someone saw the crime or an alarm was triggered. Red Dead Redemption 2 works in a similar way, and Nelson drew that comparison himself.
In practice, quiet work pays off. Describing a robbery, Nelson explained how to avoid setting off the alarm:
- go in through the back — kicking in the front door triggers the alarm;
- quietly open the lock with a special tool (a snap gun);
- destroy cameras or take out security before the alarm goes up;
- scare people with shots fired nearby (suppressive fire) and leave without casualties.
Jewelry stores, according to the developer, have heavy security, and police respond to those robberies more aggressively. More on robberies and money in our guide on how to make money in GTA 6.
How to lose your wanted level in GTA 6
The big change is that police work from a suspect description, not just a dot on the map. NYT and Famitsu describe the system as "heat": police know what you look like and what you're driving, and they're looking for that specific person. That gives you several ways to disappear:
- Leave the search area. As before, step one is to get out of sight and out of the area where they're looking for you.
- Change clothes. Your description no longer matches. According to Nelson, you can keep spare clothes in your personal vehicle, which you can call at any time.
- Change cars. The car you were seen in is part of the description. Stolen cars may also have a tracker that gives away your position if you drive slowly.
- Ditch your weapon. Throwing your weapon away lowers suspicion. A big gun like a rifle won't fit in your pocket — people can see it.
- Split up. Jason and Lucia can head in different directions to make it harder for police to track you down.
Focus mode helps you spot nearby police, and in one account Nelson also mentioned "Adrenaline", which helps you get away during a chase. How it works hasn't been explained, so we're treating it with caution.
Rockstar hasn't said whether a respray at Pay 'n' Spray clears your wanted level the way it did in older games. All we know is that you can repair and respray cars there and register stolen cars in your name.
Criminal profile: the game remembers how you play
According to Famitsu and NYT, GTA 6 keeps a Criminal Profile — a kind of file on your play style. If you often shoot at police and cause carnage, law enforcement responds harder and faster. If you work quietly, the response is softer. Rockstar hasn't given any specific thresholds or numbers.
It's a logical extension of the witness idea: police in GTA 6 are less of a "star timer" and more of a system that builds up information about you.
What happens if you get busted or wasted
Nelson told Famitsu that after "Wasted" or "Busted", or if police or bystanders take you down, your character loses all the cash they had on them. Money in the bank account stays — you can see the balance in the banking app on your phone.
Simple advice for the first few days: don't carry large sums around after a robbery, and deposit them as soon as you can. How the phone works and which apps it has is covered on our GTA 6 phone and apps page.
Wanted level in GTA 6 vs GTA 5
| GTA 5 | GTA 6 (based on video and interviews) | |
|---|---|---|
| When you get a wanted level | Almost right after the crime | Only if there are witnesses or an alarm |

| How to escape | Leave the search circle and hide | Leave the area, change clothes, car or weapon, split up |
| Memory of play style | None | Criminal profile |
| Losses after arrest | Hospital or police fee | All cash on hand; bank account intact |
| Police highlighting | Vision cones on the minimap | Focus mode |

Will there be cheats to clear your wanted level?
GTA 5 had a well-known code that removed your stars. Rockstar hasn't said whether GTA 6 will have cheat codes. What we know, and where real codes will show up after launch, is on our GTA 6 cheats page. We don't recommend or publish trainers and mods that promise to "turn off the police".
How many wanted stars are there in GTA 6?
Rockstar's video shows five stars, like in GTA 5. Whether there will be a sixth hasn't been officially announced: claims about six stars rely on unofficial information.
Do you get a wanted level if nobody saw the crime?
According to Rob Nelson, no: police respond when there are witnesses or an alarm goes off. That makes cameras, alarms and random bystanders matter more than in GTA 5.
How do you lose a wanted level fast in GTA 6?
Leave the search area and change your description: clothes, car, weapon. You can split the two leads up to throw police off your trail. Focus mode helps you spot nearby officers.
What do you lose when you get busted in GTA 6?
All the cash on hand. Money in the bank account is kept, so it's better to deposit large sums right away.
Does Pay 'n' Spray clear your wanted level?
Rockstar hasn't confirmed it. We know you can repair and respray cars there and register stolen cars in your name. We'll check after the game launches on November 19.
