GTA 3 missions in order: who gives them and which ones you can miss for good

Updated: 06.11.2026 Author: Alex Rayne
The GTA III protagonist fires a rifle by a roadblock in Liberty City, original 2001 release

Every GTA III mission by its English in-game name: 50 story missions by island and character, 17 payphone missions, Off-Road and RC, missable missions and the finale, The Exchange.

In short
  • GTA 3 has 50 story missions, from Give Me Liberty to the finale, The Exchange. Another 17 optional missions come through payphones.
  • That makes 67 (the GTABase count). GTA Wiki adds 4 Off-Road and 4 RC missions to get 75, while the in-game stats show 73.
  • The story moves across three islands: Portland, Staunton Island (after Last Requests) and Shoreside Vale (after A Drop in the Ocean).
  • Luigi's and Joey's missions, Kenji's missions and Two-Faced Tanner can be lost for good, and then 100% is off the table on that save.
  • The final mission, The Exchange, pays $1,000,000.

How many missions are in GTA 3

It depends on what you count. There are 50 story missions, from the opening Give Me Liberty to the final mission, The Exchange. Four characters hand out another 17 missions through payphones. You don't need them to see the credits, but you need every one of them for 100%.

Below are the story missions in GTABase order, split by island. The order within an island can vary a little, because several characters often unlock missions at the same time. Names are in English, as in the game; the "Given by" column shows the character who starts the mission.

Portland missions (1–22)

After the escape from the prison convoy, 8-Ball introduces Claude to the Leone family. First Luigi Goterelli gives the orders, then Joey Leone, Toni Cipriani and Don Salvatore Leone himself. Pump-Action Pimp unlocks the pistol at Ammu-Nation, Cipriani's Chauffeur the Uzi. Last Requests opens up Staunton Island.

Staunton Island missions (23–49)

On the second island Claude works for Asuka Kasen and Kenji Kasen, Ray Machowski and Donald Love. Arms Shortage unlocks the Phil's Army Surplus store. After A Drop in the Ocean, Shoreside Vale opens up, though Love's remaining missions still start on Staunton Island.

Asuka gives her jobs in two rounds: 23–27 from her condo in Newport, 46–48 from the Staunton Plaza construction site in Fort Staunton.

Finale: The Exchange (50)

Before the finale, Catalina gets in touch by phone; that is the mission Ransom (49). The last mission, The Exchange, takes place in Shoreside Vale: Claude rescues Maria and kills Catalina. The reward is $1,000,000. Per GTA Wiki, a Rhino tank appears near Phil's Army Surplus after the finale.

After the credits you can take your time with the payphone missions, the 100 hidden packages and side jobs, everything you need for 100% in GTA 3.

Missions you can miss for good

The biggest trap in GTA 3: after certain story missions, the jobs from earlier characters disappear. You cannot get them back on that save, and 100% becomes impossible.

Whose missionsFinish before
All of Luigi's (2–6) and Joey's (7–12) missionsLast Requests
All of Kenji's missions (28–32)Waka-Gashira Wipeout!
Two-Faced Tanner (Asuka, 27)Grand Theft Aero

The easiest fix is to keep a separate save before Last Requests and another before Waka-Gashira Wipeout!.

17 payphone missions

These jobs come through payphones: El Burro and Marty Chonks in Portland, King Courtney on Staunton Island, D-Ice in Shoreside Vale. You can finish the story without them, but 100% needs all 17.

15Rigged to BlowD-IceShoreside Vale$20,000
16Bullion RunD-IceShoreside Vale$25,000

Per GTA Wiki, some missions change how gangs treat Claude: after The Pick-Up and Trial By Fire the Triads in Portland turn hostile, after Sayonara Salvatore the Mafia (with shotguns), after Uzi Rider the Diablos, after Kingdom Come the Yardies. Side jobs on an island are easier to wrap up before these missions.

Off-Road and RC missions

Eight more jobs are neither story nor payphone missions, but they count toward 100% and show up in the in-game stats. Off-Road missions are runs in off-roaders such as the Patriot and the Landstalker. RC missions start from TOYZ vans.

Off-RoadRC (TOYZ vans)
Patriot PlaygroundDiablo Destruction
A Ride in the ParkMafia Massacre
Multistorey MayhemCasino Calamity
Gripped!Rumpo Rampage

If a mission keeps beating you, the built-in GTA 3 cheats can help with health or weapons. In the Definitive Edition they disable achievements, so save to a separate slot before using them.

GTA 3 missions FAQ

How many missions are in GTA 3?

50 story missions and 17 payphone missions, 67 in total. GTA Wiki adds 4 Off-Road and 4 RC missions to count 75, and the in-game stats show 73 because Give Me Liberty and Luigi's Girls are not counted.

What is the last mission in GTA 3?

The Exchange in Shoreside Vale: Claude rescues Maria and kills Catalina. The reward is $1,000,000.

What is the first mission in GTA 3?

Give Me Liberty, the opening mission with 8-Ball, which unlocks the Portland safehouse. The first mission with a cash reward is Luigi's Girls ($1,500).

Why do some guides list 48 story missions?

PowerPyx and iGTA count only the missions that add to the completion percentage. Give Me Liberty and Luigi's Girls do not, so 50 becomes 48.

Which GTA 3 missions can you miss for good?

Luigi's and Joey's missions once you complete Last Requests, Kenji's missions after Waka-Gashira Wipeout!, and Two-Faced Tanner after Grand Theft Aero. Do them earlier, or there will be no 100%.

How do you unlock Staunton Island and Shoreside Vale?

Staunton Island unlocks after Last Requests (22), Shoreside Vale after A Drop in the Ocean (40). The missions are the same in the original and the Definitive Edition.
