GTA 6 has no crossplay at launch: the game ships as single-player

Will GTA 6 have crossplay between PS5, Xbox and PC, will saves carry over between platforms, and can you move from PS5 to Xbox with the same progress? What Rockstar has officially said, where online stands and how it all works in GTA Online.

In short
  • GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version.
  • At launch GTA 6 is a single-player game. There's no multiplayer, so there's no crossplay between platforms either.
  • Rockstar hasn't announced save or progress transfer between PS5 and Xbox.
  • Your purchase is tied to the platform's store: a copy from the PlayStation Store won't show up on Xbox, and vice versa.
  • There's no date for GTA 6 Online. According to Bloomberg, online is planned for 2027, but Rockstar hasn't confirmed it.

Short answer: no crossplay, because there's no multiplayer

Crossplay is when players on different platforms play together in the same session. That requires multiplayer. In its June 24, 2026, pre-order announcement, Rockstar called GTA 6 a single player experience and didn't announce an online mode at launch.

So the question "can I play with a friend on Xbox if I'm on PS5" doesn't really apply at launch: even two people on the same console can't play GTA 6 together. You play the story on your own, switching between Jason and Lucia.

FeatureStatus as of November 6, 2026
Crossplay PS5 ↔ XboxNo: the game is single-player
Crossplay with PCNo: a PC version hasn't been announced
Progress transfer between PS5 and XboxNot announced
Cloud savesStandard platform features: PS Plus on PS5, Xbox cloud
One purchase for both platformsNo, the purchase is tied to the store
Multiplayer / GTA 6 OnlineNot announced; no date

Will your save transfer from PS5 to Xbox?

Rockstar hasn't announced anything about transferring progress between PlayStation and Xbox. So the answer comes down to how the platforms themselves work:

  • PS5 → PS5. Saves sync through PlayStation Plus cloud storage or transfer from console to console using PS5's own tools.
  • Xbox → Xbox. Games with cloud saves support them through your Microsoft account.
  • PS5 ↔ Xbox. Without a dedicated feature from Rockstar, progress doesn't carry over between the two ecosystems.

If you're planning to buy a different console after launch, keep in mind that you'll have to buy the game again, and your progress will most likely start from scratch. A console comparison for GTA 6 is on our GTA 6 platforms page.

What about PC?

At launch GTA 6 is only coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar hasn't announced a PC version, though previous games came to PC after the consoles: GTA 5 about a year and a half later, Red Dead Redemption 2 roughly a year later. So there won't be crossplay with PC at launch either. What we know about the PC version and system requirements is on our GTA 6 on PC page.

The game isn't coming to PS4 or Xbox One. It is coming to Xbox Series S and PS5 Pro — read about the differences on our platforms page.

Crossplay and GTA 6 Online

Crossplay will only matter once multiplayer arrives. Rockstar hasn't given a date for GTA 6 Online. According to Bloomberg (reporter Jason Schreier), online is being prepared for 2027 — but that's unofficial information.

For reference: in the current GTA Online, PlayStation, Xbox and PC players play separately, with no shared sessions across platforms. Rockstar only allowed players to transfer their character from older platforms to newer ones. Whether that approach changes in the new online mode is unknown. Everything about the upcoming mode is on our GTA 6 Online page.

What to do if your friends are on another platform

  • Pick a platform for yourself, not for your friends. At launch GTA 6 is played solo, so different consoles don't get in anyone's way.
  • If you're waiting for online and want to play with specific people, agree on one platform: crossplay in a future GTA 6 Online isn't guaranteed.
  • Don't buy twice "just in case". A digital purchase on PS5 doesn't give you a copy on Xbox. Refunds and pre-order cancellations are covered on our how to cancel a pre-order page.

Will GTA 6 have crossplay?

Not at launch. GTA 6 ships as a single-player game with no multiplayer. Rockstar hasn't said anything about crossplay in a future online mode.

Can I play GTA 6 with a friend on a different console?

No. At launch GTA 6 has no co-op play even on the same platform: you play the story on your own.

Will GTA 6 progress transfer from PS5 to Xbox?

Rockstar hasn't announced such a feature. Saves transfer within a single platform using that platform's own tools.

Will GTA 6 come to PC with crossplay?

A PC version hasn't been announced. Rockstar's previous games came to PC a year to a year and a half after the consoles.

Does GTA Online have crossplay?

No. In the current GTA Online, PlayStation, Xbox and PC players play separately. The only option was transferring your character from older consoles to newer ones.
