The fastest cars in GTA 5: what to buy, what to steal and how fast they go

Updated: 06.11.2026 Author: Alex Rayne
A black muscle car escapes police cruisers on an evening street in Los Santos in GTA 5

The fastest cars in GTA 5 story mode by Broughy1322’s tests: the Z-Type, Adder, Pißwasser Dominator and 18 more cars with top speed, price and how to get them: buy, steal or win.

In short
  • The fastest cars in GTA 5 story mode by Broughy1322’s tests are the Truffade Z-Type, Truffade Adder and Vapid Pißwasser Dominator, separated by 1–2 mph.
  • In story mode the Z-Type costs $10,000,000 and the Adder $1,000,000, and you can simply find the Adder on the street.
  • The Pißwasser Dominator is free, but only for players who carried the game over from PS3 or Xbox 360: it is the prize for winning the third Stock Car race.
  • The fastest cars you can steal instead of buying are the Adder, Turismo R and Zentorno.
  • Story mode has no HSW, and car prices differ between story mode and GTA Online.

How story mode car speeds were measured

Data checked on November 6, 2026, after update 1.73. Rockstar doesn’t publish top speeds, and the stat bars at the dealership and the in-game speedometer are inaccurate. So the figures below are tests by the player Broughy1322 (gtacars.net), which the GTABase database relies on.

  • The car is fully upgraded at Los Santos Customs.
  • A 0.2-mile section of flat straight road is timed after a long run-up, over five runs, and the average is taken.
  • The result is rounded to 0.25 mph; according to the author, more precision is meaningless.
  • Slopes, curbs and character special abilities (such as Franklin slowing time behind the wheel) distort the result, so they aren’t used during tests.

Top speed isn’t the same as the best car for racing: on a track, acceleration and handling matter. Broughy1322 measures lap times for GTA Online, and in our check there is no separate lap time ranking for story mode.

Order and figures per GTABase. GTA Boom (updated July 27, 2026) ranks the top three differently: Pißwasser Dominator 126.5, Z-Type 126.25, Adder 124.75, with the T20 at 122.25. The difference is within retest variation, so it’s fairer to say the Z-Type, Adder and Pißwasser Dominator are the top three, separated by 1–2 mph.

Real-world inspirations for the leaders: the Adder is based on the Bugatti Veyron, the Z-Type on the Bugatti Type 57 and the Pißwasser Dominator on the Ford Mustang (both GTABase and GTA Boom say so). According to GTABase, the T20 resembles the McLaren P1 and the Monroe the Lamborghini Miura. On handling, GTA Boom warns that the Z-Type has weak acceleration and brakes, and the T20's brakes aren't the best either, though upgrades at Los Santos Customs fix that.

Who comes next: places 12–21

19–21Dewbauchee Rapid GT, Dewbauchee Rapid GT Cabrio, Pegassi Vacca120.5Rapid GT and Rapid GT Cabrio: street; Vacca: $240,000

Only GTABase gives this tail of the ranking, so the order is approximate: places 12 to 21 are separated by just over 1 mph. "Street" is also per GTABase: these cars aren't sold in story mode, you find them in the city and take them. The Rapid GT, by the way, can be spawned with the RAPIDGT cheat; codes are on the GTA 5 cheats page.

How to get the Pißwasser Dominator

The third-fastest car in story mode isn't for sale, and not everyone can get it. Stock Car races are a bonus of the updated version for "returning players", those who played on PS3 or Xbox 360: both GTA Wiki and GTA Boom say so. The races unlock after the mission "Mr. Philips": Ron texts Trevor, and the start is near the Yellow Jack Inn. Any of the three protagonists can take part.

Each of the first wins gives a new car that appears in the Special Vehicles menu in all three protagonists' garages: 1st, the Burger Shot Stallion; 2nd, the Redwood Gauntlet; 3rd, the Pißwasser Dominator; 4th, the Sprunk Buffalo; and the 5th, the Marshall monster truck (per GTA Wiki and GTABase). The story mission order is on the GTA 5 missions page.

The fastest cars you can steal for free

According to GTABase, the fastest cars that spawn on the street are the Truffade Adder (No. 2 in the ranking), the Grotti Turismo R and the Pegassi Zentorno. The regular Massacro and the Lampadati Pigalle can also be found while driving around. Expensive supercars show up more often in wealthy areas like Rockford Hills.

Put a stolen car in your character’s garage right away, or it may disappear. Through the internet, according to GTA Boom, you can buy up to four cars per character, plus the spaces in safehouse garages.

Where to buy cars in story mode

Cars are sold on in-game websites: Legendary Motorsport (Z-Type, Adder, T20, Entity XF, Osiris), Southern San Andreas Super Autos (regular cars and motorcycles), Elitas Travel (planes and helicopters), Docktease (boats) and Warstock Cache & Carry (military vehicles). An overview of classes and rare vehicles is on the GTA 5 vehicles page.

Story mode and GTA Online prices don’t match: the Z-Type costs $10,000,000 in story mode and $950,000 in Online. To buy the Z-Type you’ll need money from heists and the stock market; see how to make money in GTA 5 and the stock market guide.

More expensive doesn’t mean faster

CarPrice, $mphBehind the Z-Type
Truffade Z-Type10,000,000127—
Progen T202,200,000122.54.5 mph
Pegassi Osiris1,950,0001225 mph
Truffade Adder1,000,000 or street126.250.75 mph
Pegassi Monroe490,000123.253.75 mph
Pißwasser Dominatorfree1252 mph

The Osiris and T20 cost twice as much as the Adder, yet lose 3.75–4.25 mph to it on the straight. The classic Monroe at $490,000 beats both. So if straight-line speed is the goal, there’s no point overpaying for newer Legendary Motorsport supercars: an Adder from the street and the free Pißwasser Dominator give you almost the game’s maximum.

Which car to choose

  • Best value: an Adder from the street, nearly Z-Type speed at no cost. The Z-Type only makes sense for the collection.
  • For chases in missions: the Adder, Zentorno or T20 supercars with Franklin at the wheel, whose ability slows down time; see GTA 5 characters.

Online cars are much faster: the leader there, the Cartuccia GT, does 139 mph, and HSW cars go even faster. The ranking is on the fastest cars in GTA Online page.
