RDR2 cigarette cards at a glance
Cigarette cards are small themed pictures that come in cigarette packs. Red Dead Redemption 2 has 144 of them, split into 12 sets of 12: inventions, gunslingers, animals, plants, horses, actors and more.
There are two ways to get them. The first is buying packs of Premium Cigarettes at a store: each pack holds one random card. The second is searching the world: every card has a fixed spot in a house, shack or store, and packs also turn up in drawers and in NPCs’ pockets.
Phineas’s quest itself only ends once you have turned in all 12 sets.
Who collects the cards and how to start the quest
The client is Phineas T. Ramsbottom, a cartophilist collector. He sits on a bench by Flatneck Station in The Heartlands, New Hanover. The station is easy to find on the RDR2 map.
The "Smoking and other Hobbies" quest becomes available in Chapter 2, after the story mission "Who is Not without Sin". The order of chapters and missions is in the RDR2 missions section.
Don’t put off talking to Phineas. According to Red Dead Wiki, some cards only appear in the world after you meet him, including the Revolver in Annesburg, the Grouper in Lagras and The Grizzlies near Lake Don Julio. In the location tables these cards are marked “after meeting Phineas”.
All 12 cigarette card sets and rewards
Each set has 12 cards. The reward for a set is an item plus cash: four sets pay $100 each, eight pay $50 each.
| # | Set | Item | Cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Amazing Inventions | Volatile Dynamite | $100 |
| 2 | Artists, Writers & Poets | Ginseng Elixir | $100 |
| 3 | Famous Gunslingers | Special Snake Oil | $50 |
| 4 | Fauna of America | Perfect Rabbit Pelt | $50 |
| 5 | Flora of America | Special Miracle Tonic | $50 |
| 6 | Gems of Beauty | Platinum Chain Necklace | $100 |
| 7 | Horses | Special Horse Medicine | $50 |
| 8 | Marvels of Travel | Aged Pirate Rum | $50 |
| 9 | Prominent Americans | Eagle Feather ×3 | $50 |
| 10 | Stars of the Stage | Small Jewelry Bag | $50 |
| 11 | Vistas of America | Gold Nugget | $100 |
| 12 | World Champions | Valerian Root | $50 |
Set names are given as Red Dead Wiki lists them. Other guides use variants such as Breeds of Horses, Fauna of North America or The World’s Champions — they are the same sets.
On top of that, for your first complete set, whichever it is, Phineas sends Vintage Civil War Handcuffs. Once you hand in all 12 sets, another $200 arrives. Total: 4 × $100 + 8 × $50 + $200 = $1,000.
How to get the cards fastest
The fastest way is buying packs of Premium Cigarettes at the General Store. Look for them under Provisions → Tobacco or in the store catalogue. The clerk’s stock is unlimited, so you can buy pack after pack and open them in your satchel.
According to Red Dead Wiki, Premium Cigarettes are sold in Armadillo, Rhodes, Saint Denis, Strawberry, Tumbleweed, Valentine, Van Horn Trading Post and Wallace Station.
The downside of buying is duplicates. The card in each pack is random, so the same pictures keep coming up. Duplicates aren’t wasted: you can sell them to a fence.
Upgrade your satchel
The number of packs Arthur can carry is limited by the satchel. The bigger it is, the more packs you can buy at once and the fewer trips you make between the counter and the menu. The best one is Legend of the East. PowerPyx estimates the collection at about 10–15 minutes with an upgraded satchel and 30–60 minutes without one.
What else helps
- Once the pack limit is full, new ones won’t be picked up. Drop packs from your inventory now and then.
- Red Dead Wiki’s tips say high Honor lowers store prices.
- Work out a budget. Guides estimate the cost of buying the collection very differently: the Wiki says up to $700–800 even with the best satchel, PowerPyx about $2,000. It all depends on your satchel, Honor and luck with duplicates. For where to get the money, see the guide to making money in RDR2.
Searching the world
If you don’t want to spend, search houses, shacks and stores, open drawers and check NPCs’ pockets. This route takes longer but costs nothing. Shacknews suggests combining both: buy packs and pick up the cards you come across along the way.
| Buying packs | Searching the world | |
|---|---|---|
| Money | Hundreds of dollars, depending on your satchel and Honor | Free |
| Duplicates | Lots, sold to a fence | None: each card sits in one spot |
| Which card you get | A random one | The one you went for |
| Limits | Pack limit in your satchel | A few cards are tied to chapters and events (Fort Wallace, Théâtre Râleur, Shady Belle) |
rdr2.org recommends searching by location: it isn’t faster, but there’s no randomness and no duplicates.
One card in the Stars of the Stage set, according to Red Dead Wiki, is hidden in a special way: No. 6 sits behind the curtain at the Théâtre Râleur in Saint Denis and only becomes available after you watch all 5 shows. The fifth show unlocks after the mission "Fatherhood and Other Dreams".
Where to find all 144 cigarette cards
Every card has a fixed spot in the world. The tables are based on Red Dead Wiki and rdr2.org; where the sources disagree, both versions are given. Cards that only appear after you meet Phineas are marked. The sets follow the same order as the rewards table.
The most cards are in Saint Denis (21), Rhodes (8), Van Horn Trading Post (6), Valentine (7) and Annesburg (7): one trip to each of these towns covers several sets at once.

How to mail a set to Phineas
Sets are mailed from any post office to Phineas T. Ramsbottom.
According to PowerPyx, the reward arrives 1–2 in-game days later at the same post office. Pick it up there.
A few practical points:
- In Saint Denis the store, the fence and the post office are close together: you can buy more packs, mail a set and sell duplicates right away. Rhodes and Wallace Station are just as handy.
- Don’t sell cards from a complete set before mailing it. PowerPyx readers reported that after selling them they could no longer send the set.
Step-by-step plan: one set for 100%
- Complete the Chapter 2 mission "Who is Not without Sin" and talk to Phineas T. Ramsbottom by Flatneck Station.
- Upgrade your satchel: the more packs it holds, the less often you have to open the menu and buy again.
- Go to a town where the store, the fence and the post office are close together — Saint Denis, Rhodes or Wallace Station work best.
- Buy Premium Cigarettes and open the packs. Check your satchel to see which set is missing the fewest cards and focus on that one.
- Once a set is complete, mail it to Phineas from the post office and don’t sell those cards before sending.
- Sell duplicates to the fence and pick up your reward at the same post office.
If after the first set you want to finish the whole quest, it’s the same loop: buy, mail, sell duplicates. The last cards of each set would take the longest to get, so some of them are easier to find out in the world.
Cigarette cards and 100% completion
For 100% completion you only need one complete set — 12 cards. All 144 are needed only to finish Phineas’s quest line and get the $200 bonus.
For the rest of the requirements, see how to get 100% in RDR2.
The game’s other collections are gathered on the RDR2 collectibles page: dinosaur bones, dreamcatchers, rock carvings, legendary fish and exotics for Algernon Wasp.
